Copy Cost Items Using the Estimating Explorer

You can copy cost items between catalogs and estimates in the Estimating Explorer. You can essentially build an estimate without using the Catalog and Estimate tabs. You can also combine the cost items of catalogs. To assist with quickly rolling out new catalog functions, you have the ability to copy to one or multiple catalogs or estimates and make choices about the destinations.

Only the quantities of financial cost items and members of assemblies are copied when you use this feature to copy items. All other cost items you copy will have a quantity of 1 if you copy the item to a catalog or an estimate. Also note that if you copy a financial cost item that has its members specifically selected, the Estimating Explorer won't copy these members.

When you copy cost items to a catalog, the catalog is searched to determine if the cost items you want to copy have the same reference as a cost item that is already in the catalog. If a cost item in the catalog has the same reference as a cost item you want to copy, the cost item won't be copied to the catalog. You will need to either change the reference of the cost item you want to copy, or enter additional information to the reference in the Modify References popup window when you copy it.

If you copy assemblies to a catalog, the catalog is searched to determine whether the members of the assembly already exist in the catalog. If a cost item that has the same reference exists in the catalog, the assembly member is not copied to the catalog. If cost items with the same reference do not exist in the catalog, the assembly member is copied to the same folder in the catalog as the assembly.

When you copy cost items using this feature, all the details of the cost items you copy are copied to the target catalog or estimate, including WBS codes and Export codes that are entered for the cost item. However, the WBS structures are not copied. See Copy Globals Using the Estimating Explorer for information on copying WBS code structures.

To open a job in the Manage Estimates screen, click Estimating > Estimating > Manage Estimates in the All Tasks pane. Then select the job you want to open, and click OK.
